Spitting Out Food
Did you know that there is a polite way to spit out food?
Everyone has faced that moment when you take a bite of food only to discover it contains something that you do not want to swallow. Once you have taken a bite, what do you do with pesky bones, pits, and meat gristle?
You have two options for handling unwanted food:
- Use your index finger and thumb to remove the item from your mouth and place it discretely on your plate.
- Bring your fork to your mouth and subtly use your tongue to push the item on your fork. Then place the item on your plate.
Generally, food should be removed in the same manner that it went in (finger, fork, spoon, etc.). Take small bites so that it is easier to remove unwanted food if the need arises.
